I'm running into an issue at the moment with my client's webhost. The installation process for wb only works when the files/folders that wb has to read/write are set to 777 instead of 755.

I've had to change these manually with my FTP app but my question is why would this be happening. Is it a conflict problem with website baker and my clients server? Or what could be the problem then?

If anyone has had experience with this and could share some light on this it would be really appreciated!

Thanks.

Hello,

wb checks if folder are writable. Depending on the server configuration is this 755 or 777. So this is no issue from WB this is realted from server config.

Hello. I think we have the same problem, but it seems to me that you have been able to fix it and moved on. Please tell me if I am right.

You have tried to install website baker and when you have reached step 2 in http://help.websitebaker.org/pages/en/basic-docu/installation/wb-installer.php you got "not writeable” in each post.

You have then changed permission into 777 (World-writeable file permissions (777)” should never be on for a real live site. Turning this option on enables anyone to access all your site's folders and files, and make any changes they'd like. This option is used only by programmers and developers, during testing and troubleshooting.)

You have then installed website baker as normal and afterwards changed these permissions back to 755 manually with your FTP-program? Or have I got this wrong? Does this work?

Matthias, could you please help me out. I am new to this and my English could be far better. Please tell what you mean with more understandable words for me? The easier, the better if you know what I mean.

Hi,
for my understanding and experiences this is a question of user-rights and/or user-groups.

I had a similar problem with a private linux/apache - server. On different public servers I never had a problem - just one private made. At last the problem was
my ftp-user was in a different user-group than the wb-user.
From Your ISP you get an user for your account, we call him FTP. This user (regardless which name) is on serverside in a user-group i.e.: 85
Also your ISP creates an web-account for you with an web-user, we call him WEB. This user (is used by WB) (regardless which name) is on serverside also in a group, maybe web1002

And this is the problem: user-group 85 and user-group web1002 doesn´t match. That´s why You get the error of not writeable. If one of the users switches to the other group is everything ok. - But this can only be done by Your ISP. - If he is willing to do.

Otherwise You could try with permissions 775 or 664 - but somehow You will get in troubles with the permissions.

Regards from Himberg, nearby Vienna

Hi guys,

I too am having a problem with getting my config file readable

I get this message when changing the permissions in FileZilla
Response:    500 'SITE CHMOD 777 config.php': command not understood

And this in FireFTP
500 'SITE CHMOD 777 config.php': command not understood : /su113/777 config.php

Same also happens with 755.

I presume the reason is that the server I'm on (which is my Student Union, so I only have access to FTP) has various global permissions, as I don't have a problem with my other sites. Is there anything I can do in this situation? Or will I have to wait and hope that the SU can do something about it on Monday?
