Tough question to answer since each forum has advantages and disadvantages. If you want a forum that can "share" user information then you'll need to use Vanilla since that's the only someone has currently published a module for (see below):

Having said that, I personally use SMF since I'm familiar with it and I don't need a synchronized set of users (in fact, they are two separate sets of users and I like it that way).

Hello!

Ok, actually this is Off-Topic, but well, you can say it's a question about module.

My opinion: Don't use a module regardless of which forum, there are much more problems than advantages.

About "which forum is the best": Has nothing to do with WB, but which you like.
I personally don't like SMF at all, it is everything except WB-like... But well, it's personal favor.
The best forum for a very small community and expecting not really to grow is Vanilla. It is really easy and "good".
The best forum for a bigger community I think is phpBB3, it is much more complex as Vanilla but yet quite easy to maintain, quite secure and has excellent possibility to "style it easy" just with editing a few CSS entries.
The best forum for a really big community (>50.000 users) I think is vBulletin, but it is also the most complex one out there, and not free and OpenSource.
Another "compromise" (not as complex as vBulletin but easier to handle at first) would be the very easy editing but unfortunately not free and OpenSource WoltLabBurningBoard 3.

But sure there are many more good ones out there.  cool

I also use SMF and I'm happy with it. I tried Vanilla (very simple, so you have to install lots of modules), punBB (only editing by CSS) and phpBB but finally I decided to keep SMF. I think its admin interface is easier than phpBB and its design can suit your website perfectly.

If you want to have a look: forum (SMF)
