New Chatroom Module
«
on:
April 29, 2007, 01:20:46 AM »
Greetings,
I'm not sure if this is the place to post such things, but I'll give it a try anyhow.
I encountered the need to be able to put a chatroom into a Website Baker site that could handle multiple users, rooms, and even provide some security (i.e. only registered can use it).
I chose to use php Free Chat (
http://www.phpfreechat.net/
) as the base. I've written a "wrapper" around phpfreechat that handles all of the setup. It includes the phpfreechat and can be installed as a normal module. It is called "Chatter."
I've posted the zip archive online at
http://www.midsouthweb.com/wbaker/chatter.zip
There is a ton of room for improvement, i.e. specifying more options in the admin area. I'm not sure if anyone will find this useful, but I thought I'd share anyways.
Sincerely,
Dustin Lambert

Hi Dustin,
thanks for the start of this. Did you actually check the license for re-distribution requirements? We had an issue with the forum, that's why we needed to remove the forum module.
Also you need to know following license infromation of
phpFreeChat
:
Quote
License description
With the logo
You plan to use the chat and you are ready to leave the linkback logo "pfc logo" on your chat : the chat is totally free, and you can modify it. The license is LGPL.
Without the logo
1. You plan to use the chat on a non-commercial website (examples: non-profit association or amateur web site without advertising):
* Please make a symbolic donation of ≥ €10 EUR or a code contribution.
2. You plan to use the chat on a commercial website but the chat is used on a free part of the website:
* You can buy a permanent and non-exclusive chat license for €100 EUR (excl. tax).
* Or you can lease a temporary and non-exclusive chat license €5 EUR (excl. tax) per month.
3. You plan to use the chat on a commercial website and to use the chat in a part of the site where one must pay to access, OR you plan to sell the chat in a package:
* You can buy a permanent and non-exclusive chat license for €1000 EUR (excl. tax).
* Or you can lease a temporary and none-exclusive chat license €50 EUR (excl. tax) per month.
cheers
Klaus

Thank you for the info. I think I've left everything in the module, but I'll make sure it has the linkback logo on the generated chat page to be safe.
Do you think that would be enough?

Greetings
Just looked over the chat and realized that I had left the green button, so this should be legal. According to my reading, as long as that button stays, it can be used anywhere.

vivitron, thanks for the great implementation of phpFreeChat. You mentioned needing to have a chat with users, groups, security, etc. Does your module have an admin area other than the WB admin area in order to implement these features? The only option I see is "Enable Chat?"
Thanks again,
~mathetos~

This is really a basic module at the moment. It takes the same security as the page it is setup on - thus if you have a page that is restricted to certain users, then it will be restricted in the same way. I know this isn't great, but this is basic. I plan on adding options in the future, but phpfreechat does not support many groups/users IIRC.
Hope this helps,
Dustin

After the install I get Chat Enabled? I trey to make it enable but the V will not stay for a OKE so now I keep the message: We're sorry, the chat room is currently disabled!
If I change the default name My Chat Room in to Chat I get the same problem.
Please help me out

Hi! I installed "chatter" in my WB 2.7RC1 but doesn't work.
On the ADMIN section, when I add page with "chatter" type, the error mensaje it displayed: "Table 'databasename.mod_ch
atter' doesn't exist".
I don't know to do...
What's the problem?

i managed to create the table and fields in phpmyadmin, but whether i did it right or not, its still not working.
created table called "wbmod_chatter" ,
created fields called "page_id", "section_id", "title", "enabled"
each field had "varchar 0"
in WB, admin menu allows me to create and name a chat page, but when i navigate to that page it just reads plain text = "Page content not found"

ok whatever, i just uploaded phpchat into my WB folder and made a new page with wrapper with a link to phpchat.... i didnt need any fancy features or functions, so i dont know how this compares to the actual "chatter" module/add-on.

when I open the Page with the modul I first get a view with one tab called "my room". Right of it is a cross where I can close the tab.
When I close the tab / the room it is gone and I do not know where it is and how I can get it back or start a new room.
Where do I come back to this room? And how do I get new rooms?
I use WB 2.7 and I use ist for registered users.
This option is very important for me. I hope you have an answer fo me.
Thank you very much! Yours, Wencke

I have installed this module in Website Baker portable 2.8 and read the whole thread twice but cannot figure out how to get it going. I am just learning about website baker.
After the page for chatter is created in website baker then what are the next steps?
Thanks,
