Wow...that sounds pretty negative considering that this is a great CMS that doesn't cost you a dime. We haven't even reached the timeframe that Ryan indicated above but you seem to think that it's too long. For you to quote a single person's article that is almost a decade old regarding a different type of software developed in a team environment versus a close knit environment seems off base to me.

There are some planned features of WB 3.0 that some people look forward to which will make WB even more appealing that can only be accomplished with significant changes to the core code. Even if/when WB 3.0 comes out it's up to you to upgrade...if you are happy with the current feature set then there is no reason for you to upgrade to WB 3.0 when it's available and you can continue to use whatever version suites your needs.

It's an opinion, neither negative nor positive for WB in general, but arguing against a complete rewrite for WB3. The time that it is taking Ryan to even start WB3 to date affects me only to the extent that every time I read one of these threads I laugh a little and both expect and hope that it never happens. How long it takes doesn't bother me in the slightest (obviously, since I am arguing for keeping the WB2 line alive instead).

Trotting out the old "free software, free choice" argument doesn't help. I'm commenting because I have a stake in WB, both by using it and by writing and maintaining the show_menu2 addin. If WB3 is created then WB2 gets left in the dark with no updates or security fixes (should they ever happen). Therefore it will become necessary to upgrade.

Joel's article? At times he is irrelevant, however don't throw out good advice just because it isn't recent. Team environment = close-knit environment. Software = software. Rewrite = broken addins, templates, code, websites. Rewrite + tired lead dev = probably never see it.

The changes in WB3 should be possible in the WB2 framework as well, perhaps with more pain for the developers, but in the end software is about benefit for the users, not how easy life is for developers.

For me, one of the strength of WB is the various sections on 1 page. If WB3 will have this option (and will do), then WB3 is welcome!
I am not saying that WB3 will be bad. Can not. We haven't seen the package yet. Some parts of the kernel are 4 years old. With the use of php5 we will see additional advantages that we do not see in WB2.
I hope to see WB3 quickly. Growing pains and bugs will be there. That's also the need of an alpha and beta versions. When WB3 will hit the market it will be a beautiful package. I have the confidence!

@brofield: the thing you must understand is, WebsiteBaker is open source. This means, even if you do not like WB3, you can choose to fork the code and start your own project based on the WB2 code. Since I know this can happen, and I like to keep things together rather than having multiple people working on the same thing (which is inefficient), I am happy to keep the WB2 project running for as long as a community will stick behind it. It is obviously in the best interest to avoid forks, so this is why I am happy to continue supporting WB2 for as long as the demand exists. So, if you really really don't like WB3, you don't have to use it. That's the beauty of Open Source - freedom in choice. wink

Also, just a quick note for everyone. Most of the time developing WB3 hasn't necessarily been writing code, but a combination of research, testing and development. Many things have changed in the core code since February... some features didn't make the cut and some were added that weren't expected.

The current situation: the base framework has been written, and all the (what is now known as "applications") have been started on. I am fairly confident I can release an alpha version before the end of this month, although it will look very different to the final 3.0. I expect the first RC to be released within a month or so of the first alpha.

Remember, the new release system works like this: alpha ("preview"), beta ("lock down on main features"), rc ("no new features, testing only"), final/stable ("production ready").

The number one benefit of WB3 will be the fact that, from the "ground-up", it has been designed for flexibility so that the community can make the most of the core system using addons. After all, it's all about freedom and choice! tongue

Sorry guys will try to make the release this weekend.. been very busy with work Sad
Please do not get too hyped up about the first alpha - it will really only be the base framework you will get to see completed. Most packages still need a lot of work wink

Hi guys,

You might want to check out this page:
http://www.websitebaker.org/3/

Please be aware that there isn't really any visible functionality at the moment.
To build the actual applications should only take a couple of weeks now that the framework is finished.
Sorry to disappoint for the first alpha release... I was really hoping to have some working applications included.
For any of you coders out there, check out the framework.. I think it's pretty sweet Smiley

Hoi,

In http://localhost//admin/auth/login I see Notice: Undefined property: Router::$_zone in F:\UsbWebserver\UsbWebserver\Root\include\router.php on line 315.

When I login with username and passord, I get the folowing: http://admin/auth/login and Page not found.

After a few test, I get the folowing:
Notice: Array to string conversion in F:\UsbWebserver\UsbWebserver\Root\include\session.php on line 85
Notice: Undefined property: Router::$_zone in F:\UsbWebserver\UsbWebserver\Root\include\router.php on line 315

Sorry guys... it isn't well tested on other systems yet (i'll worry about that in the beta releases).
If you really want to see what things look like, setup an Ubuntu machine using the latest release.
Install PHP5 + MySQL + Apache, enable mod_rewrite, then install WB, and you should be good to see it Wink

After I followed install instructions
Code:
Important information for previewing 3.x alpha releases
==================================================================

Hello eager community member! I am pleased to offer you the chance
to preview our next major update to websitebaker, the 3.x series.

However, as 3.0 is currently in alpha and no setup application
currently exists, you must do a few extra things to get your
preview going. Here are some instructions:

  1. Place contents of the ZIP packaging on a PHP 5.2+ webserver

  2. Import the database.sql file into your MySQL database

  3. Modify the configuration in index.php to match your db config

  4. Point your browser to the index.php file

  5. To log into the admin area, use:
        Username: admin
        Password: password

Thank you for supporting the WebsiteBaker project!

I am also getting the same error
Code:
Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in www\wb3\include\access.php on line 85

Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'Exception' with message 'Access denied' in
www\wb3\include\controller.php:49 Stack trace: #0
www\wb3\include\wb.php(237): Controller->construct() #1
www\wb3\include\wb.php(188): wb->_loadController() #2
www\wb3\index.php(45): wb->run() #3 {main} thrown in
www\wb3\include\controller.php on line 49

Check database files and this is what is installed from the database.sql file
Code:

tested on XAMPP (WinXP) with PHP 5.2 (mod rewrite enabled via /apache/conf/httpd.conf), MySQL 4.x and it works.

Nosy me was trying too,

but I only find an index-page with a welcome-text and a link admin - which leads to file not found. There is no admin- file, folder, panel or whatever.  huh Just nothing.

@viny
@maverik

the admin-link on the startpage only works if in the apache configuration mod_rewrite is enabled.
A german howto for ubuntu you can find here: http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Apache

Nevertheless during login it ends in the

Christian

Tested on Wamp (Windows Vista) with PHP 5.2 and also mod_rewrite enabled in the httpd.conf and MySQL 5.0.x
and it works also, guess the mod_rewrite was the problem.

PS: Ryan, can i use the graphics from WB3 backend (the bluebar) for a custom WB2.7.x backend layout? Because i really like the colours you choose for the wb3 backend in the alpha version.

Since WB3 is released under the GPL i cannot stop you as long as you follow the GPL.
However, it would be a shame if the WB community got their hands on the WB3 layout before WB3 goes stable... I want it to maintain as much of that "wow" effect as possible :p

It is only the blue graphic on top, i will only use it for some testing, so i can learn a bit more about the backend modifications, and not publish it.
