Can somebody tells me when WB3 is availlable?
I know the roadmap says HALF 2006. Is this still correct?

Because its almost HALF 2006.

Is there a specific launching date?

We are trying to prevent WB 3.0 from becoming vapourware, and are definitely would like to complete it in the first half of 2006, but unfortunetely we can only say that it will arrive sometime in 2006 (all existing schedule should be ignored - personal reasons have caused major set-backs in development time). (Note: to understand release naming, please read ReleaseVersioning):

Yes work hasn't been done on it for quite a few months. Still in the process on working with new templates.
Sorry for the problems not being fixed - I'm still trying to resolve minor problems with our Subversion repository (which affect development, so they are higher priority).
Hopefully within 2 weeks everything will be nice and working again. wink

guys, you should really read that page, if you are interested in WB3! Maybe some of you will have SMARTY Templates ready once WB3 is released?

cheers

if you have read it, you would have noticed line number 2 of the startpage which says:

Please note that no 3.x versions have been released yet

I stopped all development of wb2 modules when wb3 was announced - especially with the "first half 2006" release date.

Its now looking like the first half of 2007?

And as a developer, Cake or Code Igniter look like the way of the future - "roll your own" CMS

@ztar:
I was thinking to wait for WB3 before developing any templates or modules about half a year ago. Well, today I am lucky that I have changed my mind and started with WB2.6.4.

I am still far away from becoming an expert for WB, but a lot of things are now more transparent for me. The development of the SMTP mail class for example is based on v2.6.4, but will be part of v2.7 and most likely v3.0 as well.

So I would like to encourage people starting with the latest WB version available today in order to make a better product for tomorrow.

Regards Christian

@doc:

I can't be bothered looking now, but one of the threads about wb3 stated that the current modules would be incompatable with wb3.

If smarty is used as the templating engine, then all current templates will be incompatable as well.

I haven't work with Smarty never. I heard about it here for first time.
I like the current template engine, I don't want to learn this Smarty... but if it's needed, I will, because there is no better CMS for small web pages. I am using WB for my personal homepage now.

I came across WB only a couple of weeks ago, and within a week learnt enough to be able to setup a client's entire site in just a single day - including building a new template. This would never have been possible, if I had to fiddle around with Smarty.

I am not a fan of Smarty, and if WB3 goes this way, I honestly have to say, that I will have to evaluate what the other CMSs will be offering then - or stick to the already *very* functional 2.6.5 version.

icouto, you do not need to learn anything to use smarty the way it will be implemented in WB3.

Ryan - thank you for the reassurance!  smiley

It is very comforting, indeed, to know that Smarty is not going to make WB any harder for the developers! Many thanks.

sapy, unfortunetely work on WB3 is scattered at the moment, but I will be committing myself to working on the project full time for at least 2 months at the start of next year, where I plan to release WB3. wink

Yikes... I hope that's a typo, cause looking at your post date, that would mean delivery of WB3 at the earliest in Q4 of 2008?  shocked huh

Hmm, I'm not too sure how you got Q4 2008 from the first 2 months of 2008?
WB3 should be late Q1 or earlier Q2 2008 wink

Hopefully we will see the first alpha/beta releases towards to end of June. Things are looking really cool at the moment, but I still need to do a bit of work before it's ready to preview wink

Perhaps Ryan has worked on WB for so long that he is tired of it. I could understand that.

I don't see the need for many of the major changes that are being planned for WB3. It all looks like justification for a complete rewrite than a legitimate reason. After all, it is far more interesting to rewrite than to support existing users and incrementally improve the software.
http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000069.html

Since it looks to me that the major changes planned for WB3 will likely break existing code (different database design, plugin points) and existing templates (change to smarty), I don't particularly like the idea. I suggest that it is better to work within the WB2 framework and make it better for all of the existing users.

Who wants the pain of an incompatible upgrade? Look at the problems that Firefox 3 is going through trying to get addons updated for the new v3 requirements. That's the sort of problems that WB will also go through. Things won't get updated. Plugins and templates that you depended on for your design won't work with v3 (as planned).

Long live the reign of WB2. Down to the usurpers.
