It just records visitors information. I've tried putting the code in the footer of the template but that doesn't work.. Any ideas?

Get your snippet of code from Google Analytics.

Paste it into the bottom of your template, just before the </BODY> tag to monitor your whole site.

Note: Google Analytics doesn't always deliver counting in real-time. You may need to wait a while before you see results.

no I don't need a little counter for my page - I want to instal this http://statcounter.com it gives a lot of information ,  the code I'm given is
<!-- Start of StatCounter Code -->
<script type="text/javascript">
var sc_project=6124659;
var sc_invisible=1;
var sc_security="87b7c73f";
</script>

<script type="text/javascript"
src="http://www.statcounter.com/counter/counter.js"></script><noscript><div
class="statcounter"><a title="free web stats"
href="http://www.statcounter.com/free_web_stats.html"
target="_blank"><img class="statcounter"
src="http://c.statcounter.com/6124659/0/87b7c73f/1/"
alt="free web stats" ></a></div></noscript>
<!-- End of StatCounter Code -->

PLEASE NOTE: Unless you are paying for their service, StatCounter only keeps a maximum log of 100 entries. With 100 entries in your logs, you can get the state of your site but I would hardly call that statistics.

For many years I used StatCounter for all my websites and those of my clients. Now I only use Google Analytics. There is a reason Analytics is so popular and it's just as easy to add their snippet to your website.

Best regards,

Michael

Normally this kind of code need to be put right before the closing </body> tag in your template.

That's not correct. On http://www.statcounter.com/services.html it says: "Our free service is aimed at websites with 250,000 pageloads per month or less and offers lifetime summary stats and a detailed analysis of your last 500 pageloads."

Namaste Argos,

What benefit would there be for me to provide you with false information? If this was just my opinion, I would certainly state it as such. I do not attempt to deceive people by stating opinion as fact.

You are absolutely correct that StatCounter service description states you get 500 log entries and, to my surprise, my more recent projects certainly reflect this. However I have at least two older StatCounter projects where I can assure you that it clearly says "Your log size of 100 has 100 entries. Increase your log size today!" at the top of most screens.

Depending on the size and popularity of your site, just a few search engines scanning your site can replace all the stats gathered from real visitors in a relatively short period of time when you can only capture 100 entries.

I am not trying to tell you what you should do. Far be it. I used StatCounter for many years and was very pleased with it. I am simply sharing my wisdom (knowledge+experience) with you so that you have the ability to make the best decisions possible for your purpose. What ever you choose, it will ultimately be the best decision you can make given your knowledge and experience.

I would like to suggest that you may want to take an alternative approach and show more curiosity in the future when responding. Find out why someones facts or opinions are different from yours before you state right out that what they are stating is "not correct". You just might learn something you didn't know.

Please take what is meaningful to you from all of this and forget the rest.

Peace be with you friend.

With warmest regards,

Michael

One of the jobs I have as forum admin is to check information that is presented as factual, and your info about max. 100 log entries was not correct with regard to the current situation. Whether or not Statcounter had different limits in the past is not relevant. Everything else you talk about and blame me of is not relevant to me, this thread or any other previous post in this thread either.
