A year or so ago, Steven Holder mentioned that he could write an address book script in his sleep (see this thread: http://forum.websitebaker.org/index.php?topic=581.0 ). I figured that such would be pretty simple for a script coder (which I'm not). Has anybody worked up something for this?

I just got somebody onto using WB, and that was one of the first questions - if there was an address book system available. It would be a great little module to have, and surely wouldn't take long to develop...

Please? Smiley

Smiley Lol nice, way to get my engines rev'vd back up. Cant see a better way to start back into WB, those of you who havent noticed my absence for the last few months, sorry but I really wasnt around the computer. Just got back from the hospital, I had a tumor on my pituatary gland and its removed and we can hope all will be well, ah but thats neither here or now so Ill get back to my question.

Do you want it to have the following fields? Name(First, Middle, Last), Address, E-Mail, Telephone, Country?

Steven;

sorry to hear of your recent pituitary troubles!  that's never fun...i wanted to vocalize my support for rabsaul's request for an address book module for WB - this would be a great addition to an already great project!  I think the fields you mentioned above would be great starters - purhaps maybe adding a misc. field would be helpful?  anyway, that's exciting to think about

Hey, Steven! Welcome back! I've been wondering where you were, but I'm back pretty recently after a bit of an absence too. (Of course, I was never as heavily involved as you, obviously.) Hope everything will now go well with your health.

Let's see - middle name probably isn't necessary. Country - if you're talking about a module, you'll want that for sure, although this particular person won't need it. (I guess this implies an optional field for state/province/region in the address, as well, but I imagine you were figuring on that.) Definitely the rest. And some extra info fields, perhaps - e.g. family members, interests, favourite links?

Opportunity to upload a photo in connection with the entry would be great too.

One thing that was mentioned (and this may be a bit harder to implement, so maybe it's a "down-the-line" thing) was searchability. Of course, the regular WB search engine is going to pick up everything anyway, but at some point it might be nice to have a search function that is target-specific - i.e. aimed at only the address book db. Not a biggie, I don't think.

Anyway, the rest would be a great start, and I suspect would see quite a bit of use. I know that I am pushing WB to be used by church groups, and member data would be a very nice feature for them, as well as others.

I think im going to eventully try to make it like drupals, where you can add your own fields. But Ill probably start out with some static fields at first. I'll start planning/beginning tonight.

Has this project died?

I have a few customers who have to deal with subscriptions/memberships, and a userlist with more fields (such as membership date), as well as the ability to search and print search results, would be, indeed, fantastic.

Wow, what a coincidence that this thread re-opened....

I'm actually looking to create a WB site for a client's employees, and I would like to have further info included beyond username and password, e.g. employee numbers.

I'm going to have to revisit what is presently possible under the current setup....

Here is what I would like to see:

--------------------------
ESSENTIALS:
--------------------------

1) have a customisable user database (ie., admin can define the fields needed). I would want for users to be able to add address, contact details, birthday, etc.

2) each field should have the option of being a USER field (ie., information is entered either by user or by admin), or an ADMIN-ONLY field (ie., the field is internally used by the administrator only). The admin-only fields are essential for things like "membership expiry date".

3) Admin section should have a facility to search user database by field

--------------------------
VERY DESIRABLE:
--------------------------

4) there could be an (optional) site-wide, searchable 'address book' - just like we have optional 'login' and 'search' sections. We should be able to specify whether the address book is 'Pubic' or 'Private'.

5) the user should be able to specify which fields he/she wants to make publicly viewable in the address book - so, for instance, although the admin may set an 'address' field as required, the user may specify that this field is 'private', and should not be displayed in the site's address book.

6) in the site address book, when viewing a user's record, there should be a vCard link - to make the user information downloadable as a vCard.

7) after searching the address book, the results list should be printable, or (better) exportable (either as vCard, or CSV).
