Author Topic: HELP! 500 SERVER ERROR...  (Read 2426 times)

I carefully followed the instructions to install 2.6.1. and have no problem creating pages.  However, whenever I attempt to navigate to one of the pages (other than the home page:  News, Contact Form, etc.) from the menu on the HOME page I get the following error:

500 Server Error
The web server encountered an error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.  If this error persists, please contact the webmaster, and inform them of the of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

I have looked at many other CMS programs and have settled on websitebaker.  Unfortunately, I cannot seem to get past this problem.  I have double checked the permissions of the file and folders listed during install and they are set to 777.

Just a note, this was a clean install.  A previous installation caused the server error when attempting to save the content of the page after successfully creating the page.

Hopefully, someone in the community will have the answer for me....

-MJ

ADDITIONAL INFO:  When I click on my NEWS page it is trying to access http://www.mydomain/pages/news.php however when I look at the directory through FTP there is no such news.php file with the pages directory.  Is this normal?

Hi MJ,

i seem to get these errors occasionally, when there is lots of traffic on the shared server I am using. Saturdays and Sundays are obviously the days for that ... is the response of your website a bit "sluggish"?

Maybe site out the weekend and see, what the beginning of the week brings. I stopped updating my site at the weekends because of that.

I hope, that your issue is just this and nothing else ...

cheers

No, website response is normal.  I have installed and tried many other CMS software packages and never had this problem.  Therefore, it seems unique to WB.

OK ... so you say, it is a normal installation of WB2.6.1

You created a news-page and added some posts. Do you think, the creation of the news-page went normal aleady?

In the settings of WB you can temporarily set the files to RWX 777, does this change anything? How about the PHP and MySQL Subsystem, which Version do they have?

cheers

From what I can tell, considering WB is new to me, creation of the news page was "normal".  After creating the page I received the response - "successful".

I have tried setting everything to RWX 777 in the settings with no change.  During the original installation I set the directories as indicated to 777.  I did not change any permissions to any files within the indicated directories.

The version level of PHP is 4.4.2 and MYSQL is 4.0.26

so, from this side ther shouldn't be any problems. Do you know, if your webhost has the safe-mode for PHP set to on?

Is it only the news-module having these problems or other pages as well? Funnily enough, I would have thought that a missing news.php page would bring a "missing page" and not "server misconfiguration".

Just to make shure in another post somebody suggested to run the install script again (but please do a backup before, search for "500 Server Error" in this forum, if you haven't done so ...)

cheers

I have searched for 500 Server Error without useable results.  Every page created after the initial HOME page, of any type, results in the error.

I do not know if the webhost has the safe-mode for PHP set to on.  Is there a quick way to find out?  I suppose I can email them if necessary.

I will try reinstalling but I am starting to feel like this may end up being a lost cause.

I just read through the PHP information from the webhost and they have safe-mode listed as OFF.

then I would say it seems like an issue with the difference between user-rights FTP-User and Web-User ... unless somebody else has an idea ...

I've been in this position, and for me the solution was the CHMOD settings. I ran the install script and set the permissions to 777 right from the beginning.

I will give that a try.

It appears that the problem has been fixed.  Klaus' (kweitzel) suggestion of running the install script a second time caused me to remember that my first installation of WB did work but only after receiving installation errors relating to directory permissions, correcting the permissions, and then running the install script a second time.

My subsequent installation trials involved running the install script, using the initial screen as directions to set permissions on the indicated files/folders via my FTP client, and then finishing the install.  Subsequently, I got the 500 SERVOR ERROR.

For my last install, I rearranged the sequence by setting the permissions first (via FTP) and then running the install script.  I am now in business.

Thanks to Klaus and Melissa for their help.

Cheers,

MJ

I have to say that it is one of the most frustrating errors to chase down.

I've just had a similar thing happen when installing Coppermine gallery. I ended up using ssh to terminal in to my web server to set the permissions with the command line, and it worked fine after that, even though I'd used Filezilla to do it.

Hours wasted...

Hello all,

I have same error with my installation of WSB, and the logs of my ISP say this:

with settings page:

[] [error] [client aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd] mod_security: Access denied with code 500. Pattern match ".*([Cc][Cc]|[Bb][Cc][Cc]|[Oo])[[:space:]]*\\\\:.*\\\\@" at ARGS_VALUES("website_footer") [hostname "test.com"] [uri "/test/admin/settings/save.php"]

with templateedit:

[] [error] [client aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd] mod_security: Access denied with code 500. Pattern match "(((URL|SRC|HREF|LOWSRC)[\\\\s]*=)|(url[\\\\s]*[\\\\(]))[\\\\s]*[\\\\'\\"]*
[\\\\x09\\\\x0a\\\\x0b\\\\x0c\\\\x0d]*j[\\\\x09\\\\x0a\\\\x0b\\\\x0c\\\\x0d]*
a[\\\\x09\\\\x0a\\\\x0b\\\\x0c\\\\x0d]*v[\\\\x09\\\\x0a\\\\x0b\\\\x0c\\\\x0d]*
a[\\\\x09\\\\x0a\\\\x0b\\\\x0c\\\\x0d]*s[\\\\x09\\\\x0a\\\\x0b\\\\x0c\\\\x0d]*
c[\\\\x09\\\\x0a\\\\x0b\\\\x0c\\\\x0d]*r[\\\\x09\\\\x0a\\\\x0b\\\\x0c\\\\x0d]*
i[\\\\x09\\\\x0a\\\\x0b\\\\x0c\\\\x0d]*p[\\\\x09\\\\x0a\\\\x0b\\\\x0c\\\\x0d]*
t[\\\\x09\\\\x0a\\\\x0b\\\\x0c\\\\x0d]*[\\\\:]" at POST_PAYLOAD [hostname "test.com"] [uri "/test/modules/templateedit/tool_save.php"]

It has gone well until now, I suppose that the ISP have put module of apache mod_security, and I dont know how to solve this.

P.D.: sorry for my bad english.

I have had this problem on my website crimsonpaintball.co m for a few weeks but only with some pages. So I used the forms to find a fix but there is non but thats until I found my own repair!!!!

ITS THE PERMISSIONS OF THE .PHP file

I changed the permission of the file that had the problem and I set it to 0444 and IT WORKED WITH NO PROBLEMS!!!!!

Just fool around with the permissions you will get it correct.
