punbb is just a temporaly solution... untill we make a real forum module for websitebaker...

we're now just in the exploring fase, so any good suggestion. Punbb is a great example, but not the end solution. There is been a custom punbb install in development, but that is till we've got our own forum  wink

yes, I understand that from reading earlier posts before I commented- thats why I was interested in this thread. My point was for the life of me I have no idea why 'silverfeces' would say to me:

He/She makes it sounds like I posted something I shouldn't have, when all I was doing was encouraging Ryan's developement of a forum module. Just a misunderstanding thats all:) Thanks, Stan

Yes everything is going to plan - My goal was from the start build a simply CMS, work on by myself, and get a community going to help out with everything else (mods, templates, translations, docs, etc.). Cool

PunBB will hopefully be a great solution for a while, until I build a native forum. Cheesy

Aaaanyway...

I have worked with enough Form-CMS bridges in my time to know that most of the time unfortunately they are unreliable, especially when there are two sychronised user tables involved. This is recipe for trouble.

I think the only real solution is to make a dedicated forum for WB. I will be happy to contribute to the project. I would do it myself, but
[list=a]
  • I don't have enough time
  • I don't know enough about the WB architecture to make it into a module.
  • [/list:o]
At some point I might look at punBB to see if
it can be edited for WB.

This forum is quite nice. I can see it's running on the Simple Machines Forum software. I was checking out Mambo, because they have integration with both Coppermine Gallery and Gallery gallery, and everyone over in the forum keeps raving about SMF.

Did anyone consider SMF with WB? Isn't it an awful lot of work to write one from scratch?

Melissa.

Edit: On the other hand, I know integrating can be pretty terrible stuff too. I found this interesting link on the SMF support board, that makes integrating SMF with WB straightforward, but haven't had a go yet. Sounds like you could just use the code module plus make a few changes to the template's index.php...

So, if I want a forum module today, should I write one or wait?

why don't you just write a module, which synchronises the usernam/password field and logs you in both systems when you login? Think that could be handy ..

cheers

Why not start simple and build from there.  Seems to me that the comments capability in News is a good start.

Would need user level settings to determine who can and cannot post and start a thread.

Needs a front end form for posting.

Some basic threaded views. As well, we have been working on a new module that will give lots of capabilities for content types and postings, that maybe could be adopted for this.

Well, I am definitely not a coder.  Have actually been utilizing the fine talents of pcwacht (John) for all of our custom work and will continue to do so, because he does an excellent job.  An example is the fantastic work he did creating the new forms module we desperately needed.

We will have some discussions to see what we can do.  rolleyes

Hmmmmm.

The new module I am working on can't be used as a forum module, more as a faq, manual, personallist, etc etc (the fields and the entries can be made from admin, the content shows the list with links to each details)
it will be something wich hold a list of whatever wich is sortable, searchable etc and each item has its own detail page

For a forum something else is needed.

cms - content managament system -> WB
forum -> message+bulletinboard+someties extra's ->SMF

Don't think anyone need a very simple forum (the one I might produce) when there is a very good one like SMF

Integrating a forum in your content part gives way too less space for the forum to show

I'd think a synergy between the users would be good (that way it looks like one package) with some codesnippets wich produce latest posts etc to tie it in WB would be the best effort I can do.

I know a very simple forum wich can be easely integrated in a cms -> http://www.minibb.net/
but I would rather choose SMF as a forum wich can be (partly) integrated in WB

For such a thing (either SMF, Minibv or a new module) what are the wishes??

John
