I tried to upgrade from 2.7 to 2.8.1 followed the exact instructions and perquisites but upgrade-script.php just returns a blank page.
Although I had already deleted the browser cache and cookies.

Furthermore I cannot login as admin since I get the following error:

Template Error: set_root: /var/www/html/wb/templates/DEFAULT_THEME/templates is not a directory.
Halted.

PROBLEM SOLVED! I asked our server administrator to upgrade our site to a new server with PHP and MySQL > 5 and it worked.
