Eey,

I've been working witn WB 2.X for some years and got some questions...

I have read several (confusing) forum-posts about the next releases of
WB 2.9 and esspecially WB3... name-changes, domain regs, re-coding,
based on OOP, Leptons, etc..

As a designer who really likes to contribute to the community this kinda
info is pretty disturbing/misleading and soaks reaaaly much time...
but I basically got some some questions,

- Whats the (+/-) release-date of a stable version 2.9 and/or 3?
- Will the next release be a Lepton (..?) compatible/affiliate? Whats this anyway?...
- Are addons/templates in general compatible with 2.8?

Cheers,

Tez

Lepton is a fork of Website Baker and will go it's own way. I think the two CMS won't be compatible anymore in future. There will be no efforts in WB to be compatible with Lepton. Forking WB is a no-go here. Wink

No. There's much of old stuff out there. At AMASP, there's always a version info, but not all modules and templates are listed there.

- Whats the (+/-) release-date of a stable version 2.9 and/or 3?
To time we have a stable 2.8.2 and we will support it with important fixes for at least one year.
There is no release-date of a stable 2.9 till now. Already we are working on 2.9.0-dev level.
Am sure that a 2.10 will follow also.
And yes, we discuss about a 3.x version based on all the discussions and brainstormings in past. But it is a long way to a first dev-level. Right now it's a mind-game only.

- Will the next release be a Lepton (..?) compatible/affiliate? Whats this anyway?...
... There will be no efforts in WB to be compatible with Lepton. Forking WB is a no-go here. ...
If Lepton is compatible to WebsiteBaker in future? I don't think so. The philosophie behind the systems is too  different. Also the WB-dev-team is not interested in to copy a fork of WB which is based on 2.81/2.8.2 and unpublished Code from 2.9 SVN. For us, the WB-dev-team, Lepton isn't a no-go... there is only no need to talk about here inside the WebsiteBaker forum. We prefer to use our time making WebsiteBaker better.

- Are addons/templates in general compatible with 2.8?
Addons and templates designed for 2.9 and up are not backward compatible to 2.8.x.
On other hand addons and templates from 2.8.x will run under 2.9.0 (with little adaptations maybe).
But don't worry: In right time we will support the addon-developers with a brand new developer guide for 2.9.

Okay, lots of users talk about core code that needs to be rewritten, module-repository that need to be cleaned up, security holes that need to ne fixed etc....

This takes way too long and users get cranky here and there... Also seems logical

I guess it does not have to do with lack of knowledge but more with lack of time.

My suggestion: would it be an idea to raise some serious money and get one or two coders that van dedicate some serious time to coding the new ultimate version?

I would have no problem in donating 1000 euro!

I am curious if we can find some more 'investers'

Maybe if we can get 50 people donating (I see 7000+ boardusers...)
(or maybe 100 guys: 500 euro, or other amounts- I habbe no real idea what is needed)

Before you say that you do not want to pay for a free vms, think about all the work that otjets habe done for you already, I guess it will ne the best 1000 euro I ever spend! Think about it; an uberversion of the bakercms made by dedicated programmers, with top of the bill coding, no securityholes an worth much and much and much more than a lousy 1000 euro

Thanks y'all for the info..!

and yes it makes a lot clear for lot's of people I guess,
and doesn't seem that dramatic.. Wink after lot's of discussions I read
on the forum.

But it's good there is at least clearance on what going on and so on...
and yes I noticed by time the Lepton is let's say a WB 2.8.1 fork and
now extended with lot's of jquery and script stuff, which it worth
checking btw.

And well the idea of donating doesn't sound that bad and if that can
rapid up the development and security issues... and not even talking
about people who would b able to donate in technical, design and
manage skills... there's enough around! ... or team up some people
in certain areas like netherland, germany etc.. meet with involment of
current developers... do things.. etc. Just some idea...

Cheers

Tez,

guess what ... most of that was tried already by the people who are now running the fork you mentioned. My suspicion is, they didn't want it to succeed ... Lot's of people talking and nobody contributing to WB ... just contributing Modules and dependencies which had THEIR names written on it, not caring if it was good or not (that is my non-coder opinion) and for sure without any community involvement.

The list of things we achieved is long and in the course of it some people who didn't agree with the ways they got achieved or with the people who achieved them left ... unfortunately they left with a "big bang" and lots of trouble for everybody involved along the way.

Some of the things that where brought up during the period the association was established where things I do not agree with like "installation tracking" and mandatory installation fees for commercial installation services to aid financing the association. Other things where brought up which I personally like are concepts like association assisted professional services. These things are not out of the way but due to lack of manpower not forced ...

I personally give between 2 and 4 hours a day for keeping the services running and I know of some other people who do show the same kind of commitment by either coding or giving support to the community. Few of these people are actually members of the association although with their work for the community they are eligible to a free full membership. Being part of the association also means that they have an active way of shaping the association and with that also shape the future of WebsiteBaker. We could use skills in web-mastering, marketing, project management and authoring to name a few ... maybe there is something for you as well? Furthermore there is the sponsoring membership ... all the details can be read on the association pages of the website (see top-menu "organisation").

Maybe some of you all reading this see this as the opportunity that it is, the opportunity to shape Websitebaker and not to destroy it!

By the way, all of the board-members can be reached via e-mail: board@websitebaker.org ...

cheers

I deleted a total of 4 Posts in this thread because of the unproductive nature of them. 3 contained personal affronts and 1 where the content has been removed by the author.
