Is it possible/allowed to publish a commercial module based on a free GPL module? If so, what kind of license would I need? I cannot find any useful clear info about this on this forum.

So, I have a new module, that's based on an older regular free module. I want to sell it commercially licenced. Buyers may use it for unlimited projects, both commercially and free, but may not give it away, sell it, or distribute it after they buy it from me.

Advice appreciated!

Hi,
it's nearly impossible to make a commercial module from a GPL one.
In the moment you use GPL-Code the new module becomes infected and must be published under GPL also.

may be we can talk about to find a possible solution.

Hm, I hope so. I created (with a lot of help from pcwacht!) a new Event calendar, based on MyCalendar. See also http://www.websitebaker2.org/forum/index.php/topic,12903.75.html. The new module is called ProCalendar. It is improved and extended with LOTS of features. My idea was to publish it in 2 versions: a basic, free one which is kind of like a much improved MyCalendar, and a commercial version that has the bonus of custom fields and a very powerful yet easy template system.

I am thinking about selling commercial licenses for the advanced version, for a price of around 10 bucks per license. But that will need another license.

I have 2 goals with offering a commercial license: earn something and try to boost the market value of WB. All leading open source systems have both free and commercial addons. I think commercial WB addons may boost the value of WB as a professional CMS.

More info about ProCalendar, and a working frontend demo can be found at www.argosmedia.net/wb/
