hello wb-community,
Im creating a new Newsmodule for WB 2.9+ .
And, 'couse It's for the comunity at all, I thought it would be a goof idea to let you make some decisions for that.
My idea is a Newsmodule from scratch, that means that there is only an empty Project we have to fill with 'features'.
to start witch Development I need some informations...
first of all: If you have any Ideas for the Modules Name: shout It out loud!
second: the Features: Here I want to create some kind of a Todo-List. Means: what should be possibel to do with? and what should Not.
Features means somethind like 'It should have categories.' or 'I want to open it via my favorite Feed reador on my Desktop PC'.
it NOT means: 'I want a red background' or 'i want a animated Newslist'.
Summary:
1. - a Name
2. - features
Suggestions for names
kinkyNews
groovyNews

comments for Newsitems
commetns for comments
RSS Feed to acces via any Feedreader
News Archive
User Permissions (exp: show a certain categories only for a certain usergroup)
time management (exp: show this newsentry from 24th Dec to 2nd January at 12 o'clock)
Support for sending Post to socialnetworks & microblogging
include any exterenal RSS-Feeds to a certain category (exp: inlude twitter timelines)
configurable Frontend-Output
multiple categories for one newsitem

Feature request:
Checkbox for "Twitter this news item" so it sends out a "Tweet" upon saving the news item, under a pre-defined Twitter account. It would have to include a "shortened" link to the news item directly, not to the general news page,
Similar: "Post to Facebook" - Introtext + link would be posted on the predefined Facebook account
Similar: "Post to LinkedIn" - idem

Then this new module Will be à big step backwards!
I liked the idea and preview I heard and saw from John / pcwacht à lot, hè is sering things in a much wider concept and is making a multifunctional follow up to the existing newsmodule, which in fact is with a little creative view and thought is rather multifunctional already
Comments on comments seem strange to me but since i am having strange ideas and requests all the time i shall not judge that. Time management is already build in the existing module so that is nothing new...
Why build a new module when there are no/few real (good) new features in sight?
I do not say you must not do this but i just do not see the nessesity yet

Maybe discuss with the other developer, but as already said i think in these times Social Media is a must (so post to twitter etc), and archive is something i'm missing now (we can set it to not viewable but an archive would be nice).

I think this topic is a perfect example of why there should be an extra developpers corner, now three or even more people are busy with the same stuff. I think they should bind their forces and knowledge.
As said, what i saw from the new module articles was pretty freaking amazing. I have send pcwacht my ideas and my own altered version of the newsmodule. I think atomkaputze could be helped ou and spare out lots of time if he contacted pcwacht and could focus on the functions he think would be a must to include.
All of us here are far better off with one newsmodule that is damn powerful and does it all in stead of seven variations, each of them having some nice tricks and functions but none having the right combination....
Just spreading this thought to make the whole thing better, not to discourage people or piss them off

Why? Please note, it's a brainstorm, that help all developer to get the community wishes. After finishing brainstorm the developer should have a meeting to organize programming and coding

Top requirement for me is to re-write the code so that all frontend functionality is handled by view.php and includes. The current frontend code goes to all sorts of different pages and seems a little bit untidy because of this. (No offence meant to author!)
The current news functionality is good however!
I don't like the way that categories are handled, I would expect the news page to show Category Headings and grouped news items. I can achieve this effect by using a menu system and creating a dedicated page for each Category of news items, so it is no big deal.
Comment on Comments appears to be an option in the latest news, but all comments are still listed chronologically - similar to this news list! I am happy with this format, it makes it easy to see the latest comments at the bottom (or top) without having to scan through all the posts.
What a new module is called is the least of my concerns!

Good morning ( 01:00 pm lol)
I know that ist is not necessary to bi a new Newsmodule, but.. who cares ^^. I yust want to create an easy-to-use module wich implements theese twitter/facebook/archive/etc. features without the needs to include complicated lines of php-code into your template.
The Fronte doutput will be handled by an viewer-class-obect, to easy use of templates. So no html will be included into the sourcecode, yust a replaceable default template. All outputoptions will be configurable.
I will try to publish a concept-art-package (yust images, nothing else) to let you have a look into the upcomming functionallity.
greetz Atom.
(ps.: Sorry for any spelling mistakes, but writing with the touch screen a little unusual.)

@crnogorac081
News Module is part of the core.
The reason for a complete rewrite is that 2.9 offers alot of options and possibilities for far better, faster and cleaner code than the older versions of WB. In addition to that it would be a lot of work to cleanup the old and really untidy code and adding even more features would make the old code even worse. So doing a complete rewrite isn't a bad Idea.
The most important thing is to keep the functionality of the old module and to offer a replacement for the widely used anynews. Maybe it would be a good idea to implement the anynews function into the news module. After that you can think about adding new features.
Quote
categories with subcategories
Don't overdo it. Maybe it would be better to have the same categories system like topics(new page=new category)
Quote
commetns for comments
Plain overkill for a small system like WB
Quote
RSS Feed to acces via any Feedreader
Would be nice.
Quote
News Archive
Yes, Yes ,Yes!!!!
Quote
User Permissions (exp: show a certain categories only for a certain usergroup)
The current solution, is to have a seperate news page for that usergroup. If you want a more complex system, maybe you schould learn from topics again as every page is a category too, you can manage acces via normal user rights.
Quote
time management (exp: show this newsentry from 24th Dec to 2nd January at 12 o'clock)
After you are done, send it to the archive.
Quote
Support for sending Post to socialnetworks & microblogging
Would be a usefull addition.
Quote
include any exterenal RSS-Feeds to a certain category (exp: inlude twitter timelines)
Nice Idea, not a must have, but nice idea
Quote
configurable Frontend-Output
Isn't it configurable right now? Guess you want to use Templates
Additional Ideas:
Better way of adding Images, maybe like in Topics

@NorHei - I agree a re-write is necessary, and I agree with your suggestions. The current 2.9 news isn't a rewrite, yet?
If Atomkaputze wants to re-write it then I say - hurry up!
(Please use view.php, so my short URLs will work!

I'll try to make an page-independent Admistration i the backend. That means: when you create a 'newspage' you select the ctegories to display and some other options. Adding a category or newsitem will be managed over a news tool. Simply for the effect than you can easily show same news on multiple pages. So you cancreate 'Category A' for page 1 including 'Cat 1, Cat 2, Cat 6' and maybe 'category F' for another page including 'cat2,cat7'.

Plain overkill for a small system like WB
That means for the 'visitor' that he is able to comment the news itself, and any comment. So ist will be possible to create comments like theese

I even dont know wich feature will be implemented in the first dev-release, but im lookink forward for a first release in the next weeks.

About comments on comments.
If you go and compare the commentary function of WB to a full featured forum like on heise.de, maybe the better way is to make a fully functional forum/commentary module, and link it to the newspage.
In addition module can be reused on WYSIWYG pages, as a guesbook, shops and anything else that needs commenting.
I think best way is to start whith making a news module that has the same features like the one we already have, but lacks all the bugs, redundant DB calls and other nasty stuff. Adding additional features should be easy then.

That is actually a good idea with splitting the comments off completely. But if it comes to that, the "proposed" comments module should be able to work within the module generated sub-pages, like the news-posts or shop-items ...
cheers

I think splitting of the commenting functionallity would not be a good idea for this time. Build in, Comments are very simple to implement. but as an external funcktion... its ever more to do.
It seems to be a good idea for late integration of a external comments-module but for beginning it will be , because of bugreporting (and there will be bugs ^^) more easy to find a Bug in just one module and not in two.
BUT: If one of you guys wants to create an generall-Commenting-module there will be an Application Programming Interface build in in to the news-module that you can easy access all of the modules functions.
.. so thats it! now i'll take a look at thoose annoying Databa-Access-Objects i've created a few month ago for a other project.... wisch me good luck.. i'll need v.v ..

Finding bugs in one big module that combines all functionality is easier ??
I thought the way they teach at university is to cut your problem into smaller pieces and solve em one by one.
Btw, do you really think its a good idea to create fully featured comments for the news module and the create another one for standalone? Sounds like doing the same thing twice to me ? If you do a full rewrite of the full news system(including comments) it can't be that hard to make the comentary system standalone.
The main problem i see is making a fully featured comments system(like the one at Heise.de) is a task thats almost as complex as creating a forum software like PhpBB.
@kweitzel
I thought of one simple function call that can be called from everywhere, something like:
comments(page_id, subpage_id, maybe a few additional parameters)
Easy to add to any module and simple enough to call even from a droplet.
That would be a very simple and WB like solution.

Wishes:
- using categories instead of groups
- option to post an article in multiple categories at once
- option to link to another news article in the regular article content
- option to link to multiple other news articles in a special section: "Related articles"
- option to split an article into multiple pages, with of course a paging system for previous and next page
- option to add a teaser image, using a tag that you can put whereever you want in the output template, of course with added size parameters
- option to add a simple image gallery within the article

Hi,
just keep in mind that users would like to migrate their news from existing news module, so it would be nice that you use column fields with same names as in news module, so it could be easier to migrate

As said in second sentence of first post - ''Im creating a new Newsmodule for WB 2.9+ ''
2.9, not 2.8.x
I rewrote news to be a new module with loads of more features then the simpler news module and called it contents, it is in beta but I if you are a serious tester you can install it and test it to get rid of workflow errors, code errors and update more possibilities.
This module is for 2.8.2 onwards only, it needs the new secured features .
In the zip there is a [readme].txt wich explains some of the features and used template placeholders
Some of the most outstanding features:
- In settings an admin can allow different options in post editing, allow short, long etc
- Admin can decide to allow admin buttons like settings, templates, customs etc. These will allways be visible if user is member of group1
- there is paging in backend, sorting choices and searching titles in backend
- Sorting allso added to frontend, with search title form
- New are customs, custom fields can be attached to each post, simular to form.
- Next to the form standard fields there are image (with resize option), files, WBlink, and Contentslink
- Every customfield has his own litle custom template with [CUSTOM_NAME] and [CUSTOM_CONTENT] as placeholder.
- Placeholders for customs are the name of the custom, the custom title!
- Custom type header does NOT exists in frontend, is only used to divide post editing.
- New is chaining, one contentitem can have children, each child can only have a different title and short and long content.
- New is allso the place pagelinks are stored, in News they where placed at /pages/posts.
In contents a folder is created with the same name as the page contents is on.
Chained contents are placed in a folder with the name of the parent content.
- Files are stored at /media/<pagename>/
- Images are stored at /media/<pagename/img and thumbs in a folder thumbs of images
- comments can be nested, nesting level is set in admin
Let me know how it looks and what is missing.

Hi John,
I will test the module. I am rewriting the module because now I have a problem with a site mondocafe.me - its a news portal and when you click on any news before .php you will see a news id
, so for 2 and a half months I have over 2000 created useless access files on host..
I am going to rewrite the frontend so that all news would be displayed from one frontend page (for example index.php?category=football&title=this-is-title).
Benefits:
I would get rid of access files
it would be much easier to make a .htaccess rewrite for news links
what do you think about idea?
cheers

contents doesn't use news-titem-number in access page links.
It uses the pagename as folder for the newsitems thsu greatly reducing the change of having two items with the same name, and if a double is about to be created it will get the number as addition to keep them apart.
Normal news module places the acceslinks in pages/posts/somenews.php
Contents on a page called news, if the contentpage is at pages/sitenews.php, the content items are at pages/sitenews/content.php
At Argos:
Module contents is for 2.8.2
The one who started this thread said he was working on a new news for 2.9, I simply quoted him.
And contents seem to fit the requests here so I hijacked this thread
