I am helping a friend who has taken over admin for a website v 2.6.4 We need to change an email address but the address was written in the form of a gif file that at the top of each page on the site (not too many pages - a small simple site). I logged in as admin where I could see the various sections like Pages, Preferences, Access, Settings, Media, etc but could not see a way accessing/editing this gif file. I found out the location of the gif file by 'View Image Info' in my Firefox web browser and saw the physical location. I then ftp'd into the site as admin and could navigate to the folder where the gif file was. I downloaded it to my pc and used an image program to change the email address. I then ftp'd the gif file back to the host overwriting the original. Problem is nothing has changed on the web site viewed externally. I have refreshed my browser page to clear the cache but no change. Do I need to do anything else to make changes to the we site/pages after ftp'ing a new doc? (i.e. overwriting something that is already there - not adding new). Many thanks.

Wow - thank you for the quick reply. I starting reading through some of the documentation yesterday and thank you for the link above. I have not found anything yet my issue with ftp. I have uploaded a file and re-written the original - but it has made no change to the site. I would have thought the change would be visible and do not know why it isn't.

Thanks for your help - the more I read, as a newbie, the more I realise this is more complicated than I thought. The URL of the site is http://www.uuwt.org/wb/At the top of this page (and other pages) there is a telephone number and email address : Telephone: 01895 232975 Email: uuwt.mail@tiscali.co.ukThe telephone and email detail is actually a gif file separate to the template. For the home page the gif file is located at /IP address/httpdocs/wb/templates/round/title_top.gif For each page I now know the gif file name and the folder it is in. I have downloaded /IP address/httpdocs/wb/templates/round/title_top.gif and changed the email address using GIMP. I uploaded the amended title_top.gif overwriting the original and thought this would change the external view but it has not. (I download /IP address/httpdocs/wb/templates/round/title_top.gif again to a different folder on my pc and the change I made is there - so I have actually changed /IP address/httpdocs/wb/templates/round/title_top.gif on the server. It just doesn't appear when you look at the site externally.

I actually think your FTP Useraccount does not have the required permission to overwrite this file. Try again to upload the file and check the log window of your FTP program (if it has a log window ...).
Alternative way:
1) Download the whole template folder onto your hard-drive 2) replace the image file 3) open the info.php and increment the Version number of the template 4) Add the Files of the template (not the folder!) to a Zip Archive 5) Install the Zip Archive via the Template Installer in WebsiteBaker
let us know the result ...
cheers

I haven't tried to delete a file on the server and I haven't tried the alternative way yet because:- I just logged onto the server using Filezilla (this is what I use) and downloaded the gif file to my pc's Music folder so it is isolated. When I double click on the gif file in my Music folder I see the file in my image viewer and it is the amended file I want. It is showing a different email address - the one used GIMP for this morning. This tells me (as a newbie) that the gif file on the server sitting in /IP Address/....../round/... is my amended gif file.

OK ... but currently it still looks as if the file is not replaced if " uuwt.mail@tiscali.co.uk" is the old e-mail address. cheers Klaus

This is the file (attached) I've just downloaded from the server - it shows a different email address. I've had to change it to a .jpg to attach to this post. There is only one title_top.gif in the .../round/... folder on the server - this file is it. It is as if the external site is looking at a different server/folder than the one(s) I'm looking at. When you upload and over write an existing file like I have do you have to re set the server or something?

Just thought of something - I'm trying to do this on the live server/host. Should one download the whole site, make changes on a local pc and then upload everything?

No ... just the template. But it seems to me, that you are not working in the right directory structure of the live site, otherwise this image should have been changed already.
Currently the only course of action which seems sensible is to double and triple check the Domain / Path assignments and confirm with the hosting company, that they do not have any Caching Solution running.
cheers

I've read a bit more and it seems to me that although I have over written a file on the backend the front end has no idea I've done it (is this how it works?). Perhaps somehow I have to tell the frontend that a change has been made to backend so the front end can display the change. Is this how it works? If so how do I tell the frontend?

Klaus - you did it, many thanks . I re checked the server folders and there was a duplicate set of folders under www - I was looking under the IP address. I uploaded and the change has appeared. I now have some issues with missing (for some reason) page links but I'll try and sort that out. Many thanks.

Sorry to be back again - this time liking pages. The site has a few pages that has a number of 'children' under them. For one specific Page called Grants there are three 'children' but when you click on them you get an error message. In admin I can go into Pages and there is a PLUS sign next to Grants. For each 'child' page I go onto Change Settings and reset/save but nothing changes - the link to Grant is broken at the Frontend. What is strange is that I can change the Parent for each child, to say, Contact Us. the link are good and it all works. Obviously it doesn't make sense to I go back to admin and change the Parent back to Grants. However, the Frontend links are still broken. Something is wrong, may be with Grants, but I'm not sure what to do now.

on your server look into the root-folder "pages". all your pages are there. the missing pages should be in pages/grants/

Yes the pages are there I can see them in the folder you said. I know the pages exist because as said, in the admin tool I can re direct them to other Parents like Contact Us or About Us and they appear under those Parent pages when you navigate to them at the Frontend/externally. What is odd,, to me is that when I redirect them back to where they should be, under Grants, suddenly the Frontend links are broken. The Grant page is OK - you can navigate that from the home page at the Frontend.

Permissions it sounds like ... make sure, that the web-server has the rights to write into all the subdirectories of wb/pages/
