At the moment the foldergallery can only create thumbs from jpg, gif and png files. But your second options sounds good. I'll set this on my feautres list.

I would be willing to pay to have this feature added sooner rather than later! Please PM me for a contact email if you are willing and able to commit some time to make this available.
