Hi Everyone,
A long time user of WB, first time poster.

I recently decided to recreate my website, had an old version of WB installed so I decided to wipe everything and start again with WB 2.8.  I used FTP to wipe existing files and then uploaded install files.  I used Cpanel to wipe and then created a new database and ran the installation without any problems.   I am able to create pages and add content without a problem.  I had a problem when creating a news page.  I wanted to have a bit of text at the top of the page then use the News module.  So I used Manage Sections and added News   I then clicked the News module settings button, made a simple change and clicked Save.  I received the following error

 Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /modules/news/save_settings.php on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I looked with my FTP client and the file is there and I tried changing permissions on the file but hasn't helped.  The server it's running on is Linux and the PHP version is 4.49.  I'm running WB locally using XAMP on Windows XP doing the same thing and it's working as expected, like it has for me in previous versions of WB.  My website is www.bradireland.net

I have read the knowledge base about file permissions and tried searching the forum without finding a solution. Can anyone suggest a cause/solution.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

The Ownership / Permission relations are most probably the issue. I don't know enough about CPANEL but if it is as "good" as PLESK you will have more issues ...

The error lies (in my opinion) in the fact that the webserver is not allowed to read those files ... Can you hand the ownership of the files to the webserver? Or what happens if you make them mode 777 for all files (just as a test please!)

cheers

Thanks for the reply Klaus,

I changed permissions to 777 for all files and folders/subfolders in the modules folder.  No change.

I will investigate ways I can look at and change ownership of files.  I tried the webadmin.php file mentioned in the knowledge base and it didn't work.

I'm also going to try installing WB 2.7 in a different location/db to see if it is working.  Before I wiped my site I'm pretty sure I was using WB 2.67 or 2.7 and the news worked without a problem.  if possible though I'd like to stay with the current version.  I will try this as a test though.

Thanks again.

An update regarding the problem mentioned above.

I tried installing WB 2.7 and am having the same problem.  WHen I install WB 2.8 on another server it is working as normal.

I can still use WB,  I seem to run into the same problem with any module I try to use that has a save settings.php file, for example Guest Book.  I will email my web host about checking the file permissions and ask them to modify if possible.  In the meantime is it possible to manually modify news settings?  What I normally do is change the CSS settings and also modify the table design a bit.  I normally remove the username that posted the news as I prefer just to show real name/nick name etc.  I was looking at the files in the news folder and thought maybe if I edited frontend.css and maybe view.php.  I’m not sure any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hello,

You don't have permission to access /modules/news/save_settings.php on this server.

whenever this error appears while trying to load a huge amount of data through $_POST to the server (which each save-process will do) - you have to take mod_security into account, too.

You may ask your web host whether he uses mod_security, and to check mod_security's settings.

An upade and solution.  I have been talking via email with my Web Host and they have made an adjustment and all is now working.  Which is great news (no pun intended) I can now use all of WB"s features without having one hand tied behind my back.

My thanks to both Klaus and Thorn for your replies to my question.

Hi Brad,

Do you know what your web host did? I think I'm having the same problem and would like to point my web host towards the solution.

Thanks,
Larry
