Hi Guys. This is a version of the News module that archives automatically as time rolls on. I hope someone else can get some use out of it. We are using it on a few sites. I have also attached a compatible AnyNews module for it.

Hello Zonker.

Could you please give more info about this module?

Can I use both, your Module and the orig. News Module at once?
Which DB Tables are new?
How to install if my News module is allready running and I want to add your functionalities?
Will the archived News get a new URL and what happens to the original URL?

This will help a lot.

Thank you very much.

Regards,
Stefek

This is not a replacement for News. It runs as a seperate module. Unfortunatley we have not worked out how to transfer old News content into it.

So in answer to your questions:

1. Yes, you can use both the old News and News Archive modules at once.
2. When you intall it, it creates a new set of news tables,  but with "newsarc" instead of "news"
3. Install it just like any other module. It won't effect your current news.

Check out the module on my website design site blog if you want. Note the "Archive" link at the top of the content area.

Thank you for clarification.
This really helps me to understand and to figure out how to use this module.

By the way: your webdesign homepage looks really harmonious and also the linked customer work is very professional.

Best Regards,
Stefek

Hi Zonker,

Just what I needed. Thnq!

Did some tweaking to get the same archive result on your great website so it looks great.

3 questions:

1) In the mod when entering a new topic you can fill out the following field: Date range. What do I have to fill in into this field?? What does it do??  huh

2) You talk about 'archives automaticly when the time rolls on'. Every topic that I create automaticly shows up in the archive. How can I regulate that?

3) Is there a way to archive the topics in group order too?

Stefek; your last wuaetion about the URL? i am not 100% sure what yuo are asking, but basically if the blog or news page is: ../web-design-blog.php and the archive will be ../web-design-blog.php?archive=all

Baudi: The Date Range thing is left over from a project that required us to set an expiry date for the news item. It was for a list of events, and we only wanted to display upcoming, not past events. So you can ignore it.

Every item will show up in it's own month. As time rolls on, everything yuo entered in January, will come under the January heading. You can edit ther dates in the admin system if yuo are entering older items.

Archiving into groups I reckon should be done with the AnyNews module. You can set that up easily using that.

Keep in mind that I am not the programmer. I just paid someone to do it for me, so I won't be able to get too technical.

Hi there,

Just a question...

I noticed that with this customized anynews mod it is not possible any more to show the date of post by every news topic. (not on the newspage itself but on the frontpage)

I tried to change the include.php file but since I'm not a coder I could not get it to work like the normal any news mod.

Is there anyone who is willing to have a look at this customized any-news mod and is able to show the date of posting too on the spot where you placed the anynews code on your website?

Thnq!

In theory, there should be no difference in function between the old Anynews and the News Archive Any News. The only difference is that it reads from a different table...

Having said that, I can't get the dates top show up either. I will try to have a look into it, but I have to confess, I probably won't get to it for a week or two.

Ok,

I had the same thing...So I was surprised too but now I know I noticed it correct.

I hope that there will be a solution soon. That would make this snippet even more reliable to use  smiley

Hi,

thanks for a nice module. Got a couple of possible bugs and feature requests though, please consider. i'm still looking for the best option for a news module...

- setting posts per page doesn't seem to work - all posts are listed regardless.
- the articles aren't included in the site search for some reason?
- an option of choosing an image from /media or hard drive for the news item, that would automatically create a thumbnail to show with the short description (as in, news list) would be a huge improvement, i wonder if any news module does this yet...
- another most welcome option would be the possibility to set the public/private status of a news group.

i haven't mapped the full news module range yet for the options i'd like, so the search continues... just wondering if anyone else has been in the same situation.

Haven't had a chance to do it yet. Maybe someone else has some time to look at it? We don't actually need these functions at the moment, so there is no urgency for us.

Hi Zonker,

1st, thnq for the quick respond.  smiley

Regarding your answer then it's better to ask all the users who are capable of doing this (the coders)
if there willing to put time into this small issue.

The problem is this:

I noticed that with this customized anynews mod it is not possible any more to show the date of post by every news topic. (not on the newspage itself but on the frontpage)

Hope for an answer and solution.

I'm trying out this module and while it seems to work, the date feature is unusable (see attached screenshots). Any ideas on how to fix this?  I'm willing to work with the other limitations, but not being able to set a date defeats the purpose of archiving...  wink

Thanks for a great module!

Hi Marccouture,

I have not seen that error with the date before.

I have just uploaded our latest version of the module, which is working OK in all our installations. Check the info.php file and see if you have version 0.2.6. (I am not sure which version was up before so it might be the same.)

It should give yuo a little calendar graphic thing.

Hey, I wonder if it's the language. Maybe our calendar only handles English. Any techo's out there with an opinion?  huh

@marc:

you tried this on a 2.8RC1 installation?
If "yes" it's clear. There seems to be some changes in the jscalendar include that the module couldn't handle.
Myself stumpled in a similar trouble some hours ago where I used the call for the jscalender in a code section, which didn't work anymore under 2.8RC1

I'm using the news with archive option on WB 2.7 final.

I've got the same problem. There's some weird code in the date textbox and a < > in the time textboxt.
Language settings are English with 00:00 AM/PM time format.

Oh, and the news archive is awesome!

Edit: included a screenshot.

Ok, the latest version seems to have worked out the calendar issue.  Thanks!

Only problem left for me to figure out is how to get this module to display dates in other languages than English...  Everything seems hard-coded and I am unsure what variables to modify in view.php to get dates to show in French, for instance.  Any ideas?

Ok, I'm not a programmer and need some gentle guidance here...  I figured out that the gmdate function is used in view.php to set the date parameters, and that I can *possibly* use the setlocale() function to change the date to show in French.  What syntax do I use in view.php to make dates appear in French in the archive section?  Many thanks!!!

EDIT: in the meantime, I modified this line in view.php:

$month_current = gmdate('F Y', $post['posted_when']+TIMEZONE);

to

$month_current = gmdate('m-Y', $post['posted_when']+TIMEZONE);

I'd prefer seeing "Août 2009" instead of "August 2009" or a numeric string...
