Author Topic: New (former Guestbook) modules: "Small Ads" and "Jokes"  (Read 3189 times)

Hello,
I just finished making a couple of changes to the guestbook-module so that, at the end, I got a new modul for publishing small adds on my site.
In German it's called "Flohmarkt" (flea market).
For not being a coder I simply changed and deleted all that I didn't want to have.
I hope this won't be a problem for the creators of the guestbook-module.
I changed the following things:
- removed the smileys
- changed the input form items from "Name, Email, Website and Message" to "Title, Email, Phone and Description"
- changed the linked website-icon to a non-linked phone-icon that shows the phone number on mouse-over.
- changed the variable mod_guestbook to mod_flohmarkt
- removed the time-display
- in the file view_entry.php I changed some "$TEXT"-Variables (accessing the general WB-language-files) to "$mod_flohmarkt" because without doing this there were some errors in the form for editing entries.
- I didn't translate nor remove the language files other than english and german. Feel free to translate them!
-I wasn't sure what to do with the text in the info.php which talks about the changes of all the guestbook releases. At the end I decided not to change them but to add a small comment that I made a "small ads"-module out of the guestbook.

So, nothing special but the small_ads-modul works great for my needs of giving people an occasion to place some small ads within my site. Maybe there are some more people who can make good use of it.

There are a couple of things that some people would like to have integrated in this modul but I'm not able to realize:
- restricted access: the permission only for registered users to place an ad but for all people to read them.
- to sort the entries into "for sale" and "wanted".

Maybe someone likes do do this job  grin

For the second module "Jokebook" or "Witzbuch" in german I again changed some things to let the guestbook appear as a "jokebook". I made it for a kids-site so that the kids can learn a little bit Web 2.0/ blogging by placing their favorite jokes on the website.  cheesy
Maybe this module will fill somebody with enthusiasm too  grin

I just download the latest version of the Small Ads module from AMASP. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work in English. Here is the error message.

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/tngcons/public_html/research/modules/small_ads/languages/EN.php on line 69

The solution is to replace the following:

$MOD_flohmarkt['MAILMESSAGE'] = 'There's a new Website Baker Small Ad.';

... with ...

$MOD_flohmarkt['MAILMESSAGE'] = 'There is a new Website Baker Small Ad.';

Once I made this change, I was able to get into the settings. However, try as I did, I could not submit a new add as it produces two popup error messages:
  • Verification failed
  • (blank message)

There is also a second form below the first which has no field captions and the buttons are often empty. Not sure what to do.

One more thing. From AMASP, when I click on the link for the forums, it takes me to the guestbook project.

(update: I clicked on one of the blank buttons and it saved my ad.)

By the way, I am using WebsiteBaker 2.8.1.

With best regards,

Michael

OK ... looking at this error makes it seem obvious, doesn't it? Anyway, the "empty buttons" issue makes me believe that there are still some language variables missing. You might want to cross-compare the EN language file with another one (if there is).

cheers

Hi Klaus,

I was just trying it out. I recently created a site for the sole purpose of installing as many modules as I can so that I can see what they do and how they might be of use to me and my clients. I'm up to about 40 modules.

WebsiteBaker is always more end-user friendly when the dowloadable modules work properly. I am happy to report that most of them still seem to work with WB v2.8.1. Other than KIT, this is the first plug-in module that I came across which didn't work properly at all.

I don't have time or a need to work on troubleshooting this module right now. I just wanted to bring the issue to the authors attention. It might also be worth noting that there is a known issue with the current version in AMASP so that end users don't end up frustrated trying to make it work.

With warmest regards,

              Michael
