Question: Why?
Removing the /pages/ is just cosmetic. It has no SEO value!
There is not much difference with that or a page like
http://www.microsoft.com/en/us/default.aspx.
If you don't like the /pages/, changing it to something else (like /html/ or /en/) is less risky.
The article you referred also has a good list of things that might give problems if you do the suggested trick.
WB is very good in SEO using named url's and not the J..la ?option=7823&module=mymodule¶meter=7hhsgw.
For those url's you want to rewrite. Not for WB urls.
