Hi all, just signed up for a vps and installing a web baker on one of the accounts there.

Now then, i cant create a page in any directory other than one with 777 permissions, yet on my old reseller shared hosting i could put them in a 755 directory. This is espcially a problem for me as i dont use the /pages directory, so the pages would normally go in the root. Now, i cant do that.

They are saying that all directories must be 777 in order for the script to work, but i know this isnt the case. Whats going on? I know its something to do with groups (or at least i think it is), but i cant pin it down. Is there a chance that i'm not the owner of the files after i ftp them> would that make any difference?

Thanks

Please read the section on the help website (FAQ and Knowledge Base) and search the forum for permissions.

Maybe you were running PHP as a CGI application on your shared host (like Dreamhost does) - which causes FTP & applications like WebsiteBaker to run as the same user. You are probably running PHP as an Apache module on your VPS, where different users are involved.

aha.. makes sense Smiley you might be right and the first person to come back with a useful answer ! even the support team at the server company werent much help.

. okay.. so do all writeable folders such as /pages need to be 777 then for WB? Meaning that if i'm using the web root instead of /pages for my pages, then i need to set public_html to to 770 minimum? Would that be risky?

I'm afraid you have exhausted my knowledge in this area. I am in the same situation as yourself and am in search of a similar solution.

oh well, at least you've highlighted the problem.. thanks anyway Smiley

i got this back from my server support about chkmod'ing to 770 in the web root.

"public_html folder should only be writeable by the owner, although group write permission will not harm it from the web users, you should still be careful."

I'll be doing that then, as having all my url's as site.com/pages/ just seems daft to me.
